MobiHub SmartRelay: how it works, why enable it, and how much speed gain it provides

⚡ What is SmartRelay and why do you need it

When you use a mobile proxy, the phone loads websites via mobile internet and then sends this traffic to the MobiHub Relay Server — an intermediate server that the proxy end user connects to. This is where the main problem of the standard operation scheme lies.

SmartRelay is an option in the MobiHub Android app that changes the outbound traffic route: instead of mobile internet, data is sent to the Relay Server via Wi-Fi. It solves two problems at once: eliminates speed limitations and halves mobile data usage.

🔧 How a mobile proxy works: the basic scheme

To understand the benefit of SmartRelay, you need to understand how traffic generally moves through a mobile proxy.

Traffic path through a mobile proxy Website internet ↓ Download (loading) Phone SIM card + mobile internet → Upload (sending) MobiHub Relay End user Speed = min(D, U)

The phone performs two actions simultaneously:

    1. Downloads websites through the incoming (Download) channel
    2. Sends traffic to the Relay Server through the outgoing (Upload) channel

The proxy speed is determined by the minimum of the two channels. And this is where the main problem lies.

❌ The problem: narrow outgoing mobile internet channel

Mobile internet is asymmetrical. Operators optimize their networks for content consumption, not for content transmission. A typical picture:

    Download ↓ 20 Mbit/s 100% Upload ↑ 3M 15% → Proxy speed without SmartRelay = 3 Mbit/s

    Double data usage without SmartRelay

The phone first downloads website content via mobile internet, and then sends it back via the same mobile internet. Each megabyte is counted twice:

Website→Phone 10 MB + Phone→Relay 10 MB = Total: 20 MB instead of 10 MB Double SIM traffic usage without SmartRelay Both channels load mobile internet simultaneously
⚠️ Without SmartRelay: proxy speed is limited by the mobile internet Upload channel, and SIM card traffic is consumed twice as fast as normal.

✅ How SmartRelay solves both problems

When SmartRelay is enabled, outgoing traffic goes to the Relay Server via Wi-Fi, not via mobile internet. Mobile internet is used only for downloading websites.

SmartRelay enabled Website internet ↓ Download mobile int. Phone SIM: Download only Wi-Fi → Upload to Relay Wi-Fi router → Wi-Fi Upload MobiHub Relay End user

Result: SIM card uses traffic only in one direction (website Download), and fast unlimited Wi-Fi handles all outbound load.

📊 Comparison: with SmartRelay vs without it

Without SmartRelay With SmartRelay Outgoing channel Mobile Upload Outgoing channel Wi-Fi (100+ Mbit/s) Proxy speed = min(Download, Upload) Proxy speed ≈ Download speed SIM traffic usage Double (×2) SIM traffic usage Normal (×1) Load on operator Double — 10–20% drop Load on operator Download only Proxy IP Mobile IP Proxy IP Mobile IP Wi-Fi IP does not appear

    💡 Specific benefit examples

Example 1: typical mobile internet (Download 20 / Upload 3)

    Without SmartRelay Download: 20 Mbit/s Upload: 3 Mbit/s Proxy: 3 Mbit/s With SmartRelay Download: 20 Mbit/s Wi-Fi Upload: 100+ M Proxy: ~20 Mbit/s

Result: speed increased from 3 to ~20 Mbit/s — 6–7 times faster. SIM traffic usage halved.

Example 2: good Upload, but double load (Download 30 / Upload 25)

Even when Upload is close to Download, without SmartRelay both channels are loaded simultaneously. The mobile operator "sees" double load and reduces speed. In practice, proxy speed ends up 10–20% lower than the phone's actual speed. SmartRelay removes Upload load from the SIM card — both channels operate without interfering with each other.

    Example 3: weak signal (Download 2 / Upload 1)

Even with a weak signal, SmartRelay helps: Upload goes via Wi-Fi and does not limit Download. Proxy speed will be ~2 Mbit/s instead of ~1 Mbit/s — a twofold improvement. Plus SIM traffic is saved.

💡 Conclusion from examples: SmartRelay improves speed in every scenario. The larger the gap between mobile internet Download and Upload — the greater the speed increase.

🔌 Support for all protocols: HTTP, SOCKS4, SOCKS5 (TCP and UDP)

SmartRelay works with all protocols that MobiHub supports. Switching the Upload channel to Wi-Fi happens at the network level and does not depend on the proxy protocol.

SmartRelay works with all protocols HTTP TCP SOCKS4 TCP SOCKS5 TCP + UDP SmartRelay option does not depend on protocol choice Switching Upload to Wi-Fi happens at the network level regardless of which protocol the end user is using

This means you get the benefits of SmartRelay no matter which protocol you work with: browsers, automation tools, or any other software that works via SOCKS5/UDP including.

🔒 Security: your Wi-Fi IP will never appear in the proxy

This is an important point that raises questions for new users. When SmartRelay is enabled, the phone uses Wi-Fi only to send data to the Relay Server. Website loading still happens exclusively via mobile internet. The proxy end user always sees only the operator's mobile IP. The Wi-Fi IP technically cannot appear in the proxy.

🛡️ Guarantee: Thousands of MobiHub users worldwide work with SmartRelay enabled every day. Adding the Wi-Fi IP to the proxy is technically impossible.

    ⚙️ How to enable SmartRelay

SmartRelay is enabled when creating a proxy in the MobiHub Android app — just check the corresponding checkbox. Available in the Professional plan of the MobiHub.biz platform for $7/month.

The correct choice of Relay server for minimal ping and understanding the traffic path are described in the article "Proxy geolocation, Relay server and SmartRelay: how it works".

    🏁 Conclusion

SmartRelay is not just an additional option, but a fundamental improvement in mobile proxy architecture. Without it, speed is limited by the narrow Upload channel, and SIM traffic is consumed twice as fast. With it, Upload goes through Wi-Fi, traffic consumption is normal, and proxy speed approaches the phone's actual Download speed. For most users, the speed increase ranges from 2 to 7 times. Works with all protocols including SOCKS5/UDP. We highly recommend enabling it.
